Recognizing Outstanding Sarasota Architecture & Design

The Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Institute of Architects presented it's annual design awards at a gala held on May 15th. According to Harold Bubil, real estate editor of the Herald-Tribune Media Group, the winners have established a new state of the are with “enclosed structures being less evident; open, airy buildings, many with flying posts and beams that frame outdoor space, and raw concrete walls and roofs, provide grand views for clients.”

"Enclosed structures are less evident"

The winning architects include local firms Guy Peterson Office for Architecture, Seibert Architects, Sweet Sparkman Architects, Leader Design Studio, Carl Abbott Architect/Planner, Julian Norman-Webb Studios, Halflants + Pichette Studio for Modern Architecture, Carlson Studio Architects and Traction Architecture of Tampa.

Five different categories were judged; Commercial, Residential, Renovation, Unbuilt and Theory. The entries were judged by architects all from San Diego, California. Awards of Excellene and Awards of Merit

Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit were given out to a number of talented architects and designers, including Sweet Sparkman Architects who won the commercial design award for work on Beach Park Pavilions in Manasota, North Jetty, Casperson and South Lido beaches in Sarasota County. The jury felt that the pavilions “are uniquely suited to their place. They are functional and beautiful, with well-integrated sustainable elements that add rather than detract from their aesthetic.”

The Award of Excellence for residential was presented to Guy Peterson Office for Architecture for a residential project on Casey Key. The home is very near to the beach and must be able to stand up to the harsh climatic nature of living so close to the water in Florida. Built using strong materials, the house can withstand the stresses of the beach and at the same time, is beautifully designed.
