The Sarasota area is a great place live with loads of different communities, but how do you know what neighborhood is right for you and your family. Here’s a brief overview to get you started.


The city of Sarasota is one of Florida's top draws for people moving to Florida. The city's gorgeous Suncoast location means there are beautiful beaches and lots of waterfront real estate and its outstanding cultural attractions make it a rival for much larger cities.

Downtown Sarasota

Downtown Sarasota is perfect for those who like to be at the center of it all. Sarasota is known for it’s great cultural offerings, so if you are looking for a home within walking distance of the city’s opera, art galleries and great dining , a downtown condo is ideal for you.

Anna Maria Island

Ana Maria Island is the northernmost of the barrier islands in the Sarasota area. It is divided into three cities, Anna Maria to the north, Holmes Beach in the Centre and Bradenton Beach in the south. The island has the laid back feel of an Old Florida beach town.

Bird Key

Bird Key is an island in Sarasota Bay, linked to the mainland by John Ringling Causeway. It’s a small community of luxury homes with a great location, convenient to both Armand’s Circle and Downtown Sarasota.


Bradenton is just north of Sarasota and stretches along the Manatee River. West Bradenton is the older part of the community, and is popular because its proximity to the beach. East Bradenton is home to a number of newer neighborhoods including the Lakewood Ranch golf community.

Casey Key

Casey Key is a barrier island in Nokomis, to the south of Sarasota. Almost all homes here are waterfront and in the luxury price range.

Lakewood Ranch

Lakewood Ranch is an 8500 acre golf community east of Bradenton. It is the largest green-certified development in the country. The community consists of several different neighborhoods and housing styles from downtown apartments to luxury manor homes.

Lido Key

Lido Key is a barrier island directly west of Sarasota. It’s joined to the mainland by the John Ringling Causeway. It is home to several gorgeous sandy beaches and is adjacent to the Armand’s Circle shopping district.

Longboat Key

Longboat Key is a barrier island, between Anna Maria Island and Lido Key, to which it is joined by a causeway. It’s a great place to look for waterfront luxury homes and mid-priced luxury condos.

Palmer Ranch

Palmer Ranch is a golf course community located just south of Sarasota. It consists of nine neighborhoods including Huntington Pointe, which is close to the beach and Savannah at Turtle Rock which is a development of maintenance-free single family homes.


Osprey is a community South of Sarasota. It’s a quiet easy-going place with broad tree-lined street and ocean views. You’ll find everything from luxury waterfront homes to condos and affordable family homes.

Siesta Key

Siesta Key is a beautiful barrier island community, which is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Siesta Beach. The community is the place to look for luxury beachfront homes and ocean view condos.


Venice is a waterfront community south of Sarasota. The city boasts 14 miles of beaches and a quaint downtown that has a great laidback feel.

West Of The Trail

West of Trail is the area of Sarasota west of US 41, in Sarasota. It’s a historical part of the city with many beautiful homes. Neighborhoods include Harbor Acres, Oyster Bay and Coral Cove.


Spread out along Lemon Bay, the community of Englewood offers loads of luxury waterfront homes but is also a good place to look for affordable, single family properties as well. The community also includes Manasota Key, where there are beautiful gulf front beaches.

Sarasota Climate

Sarasota is warm and sunny all year round. In the winter the temperature is typically 65 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit (18-21 Celsius for Canadians!) and in the summer cool Gulf breezes keep the temperature between 72 and 90 (22-32 Celsius). The winter months are generally dry, while in the summer we often get afternoon thunderstorms.


Sarasota Schools

Students living in the Sarasota area are served by the Sarasota County, Manatee County and Charlotte County School Districts. School boundaries can be found on the following links:

Pine View School in Osprey was the top ranked school in the state in 2015, according to U.S. News and ranked 6th nationally. Other highly rated public schools in Sarasota include Suncoast Polytechnical and Riverview.

Sarasota Healthcare

Sarasota offers excellent healthcare options and Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which is centrally located in Downtown Sarasota, is considered one of the top hospitals in the state.

Sarasota Transport

You can fly directly to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, daily from several US hubs and from Toronto. Tampa International is just an hour away and offers direct daily flights to over a hundred national and international destinations.

Driving time to Tampa is an hour, Orlando is 2 hours and to Miami is about 3.5 hours.

Sarasota County is served by the SCAT bus service.

Sarasota Recreation

Sarasota is truly a city where you will never run out of things to do. There is a long tradition of support the arts here and the city is home to a year round calendar of events and festivals. We also have some of the best beaches in the state and golfers have nothing to complain about either!

Sarasota Golf

Sarasota has numerous great golf courses for all levels of players. Top local courses include Legacy at Lakewood Ranch, University Park and River Strand, all three of which are open to visitors. There are a number of excellent private courses in the area as well, including the Ritz-Carlton on Lido Key and the Concession. Sarasota Beaches

sarasota beachesBeaches are something Sarasota has in abundance. Probably the most famous is Siesta Beach, which is frequently cited as the best in the country. Located on the Siesta Key barrier island, its sparkling white quartz sand and the stunning turquoise waters of the Gulf are a sight to behold. Another local beach worth mentioning is Brohard in Venice. This is the place to come if your four-legged friend also enjoys taking a dip. It's almost a mile of sandy dog heaven, with lots of facilities for the two-legged members of the family as well.


Sarasota Arts, Culture and Recreation

Sarasota has a long tradition as an artists' haven and as a result, the cultural scene here could rival that of any large metropolis. The city has its own opera and several theater companies. There is a year-round schedule of festivals that covers everything from jazz, chamber and folk music to sand sculpting.

For sports fans, the Sarasota area is home to three major league spring training camps, the Orioels play at Ed Smith Stadium, the Pittsburg Pirates are just to the north in Bradenton and to the south in Port Charlotte, you'll find the Tampa Bay Rays. Sarasota is also a stop on the ATP Challenger Tour. The other big sporting event on the city's calendar is the Powerboat Grand Prix, which takes place in June of every year.
